Wine hike on the Moselle's Mount Everest

Wine hike on the Moselle at Calmont - we report from our tour | b-ceed

Wine hiking on the slate slopes of Calmont

Can you imagine that a wine hike can also be a sporting challenge with a real alpine feeling? We were hiking in the Calmont region on the Moselle loop. Some of the steep slate slopes of the Calmont rise almost vertically more than 400 metres into the air. At the top of the lofty heights is a via ferrata. Come with us on an alpine wine h ike around the steepest vineyard in Europe. Wow feeling and thrills are guaranteed on this wine hike .

Wine hiking is the trend! And this is true for all age groups.

A wine hike is the ideal leisure event in late summer. Especially just before the grape harvest, when the vines are full of grapes and the vineyards are illuminated by the warm late summer sun. An atmosphere that promises holiday feeling, even if you are only a few kilometres away from the nearest wine region .

Whether in a club, with a few friends or with the team - hiking through the vineyards on picturesque paths above the Rhine, Main or Ahr is booming. Visitors are attracted by wonderful views of the valleys of the wine-growing regions and small guest gardens with regional wines. Does that sound relaxed? Yes - but a wine hike can also be exciting and full of thrills.

On the Mount Everest of the Moselle region

The Calmont is the vineyard with the steepest slope in Europe - located in one of the most beautiful wine-growing areas in Germany, in the Moselle valley. Not for nothing is it also called the Mount Everest of the Moselle. It really is gigantic, the mountain covered with Riesling vines between the tranquil wine villages of Bremm and Ediger-Eller. Situated above the Moselle loop, it stands out even from a distance. It is unbelievable that, with a slope of around 65 degrees, people harvest the vines here!

Alpine feeling and romantic vineyard terraces

It is considered one of the most breathtaking wine hiking trails, and not only because of its gigantic view: the Calmont Klettersteig. The trail winds through the upper part of the almost 400-metre-high vineyard, providing an incomparable view of the Moselle loop and the monastery ruins of Stuben. The entry point is above the wine town of Eller and leads past the fear of death. But don't worry - the Todesangst is just a rocky outcrop that has a fascinating view to offer.

The via ferrata itself is only moderately difficult, but it is not for hikers with a fear of heights. The gigantic view at the summit, however, is hard to beat after the ascent.

If steep slopes and alpine via ferratas are not for you, then there is a more comfortable way to reach the summit cross: via the Moselhöhenweg with its extensive panoramic view.

Guided wine hike for every level

Everyone gets their money's worth on our guided wine walks, as we adapt the level of difficulty to the needs of the participants. The regional guides also know almost secret, dreamlike high-altitude paths through the vineyards. Fascinating stories about the region and the most beautiful views included.

Via the Moselsteig through the Calmont region

The wine h ike around the Calmont is also possible at every level of difficulty. The various paths, trails and roads up to the summit plateau provide the perfect setting for this. In this way, we also reach the summit of the Calmont without climbing at all - via the panoramic high trail.

The high trail "Moselsteig" runs more leisurely through the vineyards. This trail also offers wonderful views of the river bend and the valley. It is not without its alpine flair. The first ascent is also steep. After that it becomes almost southern. Past peach and mirabelle plum trees, the path winds through the vine terraces with their Riesling vines. The predominantly mild climate characterises the wine of this region. We feel more like we are in South Tyrol than in a region on the Middle Mosel.

Wine hike with culinary highlights

What would a wine hike be without wine tasting and a culinary stopover! On our guided hikes, both are naturally part of the experience. We are walking in one of the most famous vineyards, so we enjoy the Moselle Riesling directly from the vintner. The right snack is also provided. From traditional wine taverns with regional specialities to upscale cuisine - there is something for everyone's culinary taste around the Calmont.

An exciting wine-hiking Olympics for teambuilding

A small wine-hiking Olympics is an interactive highlight that ensures lots of fun and team spirit. In small groups, tasks relating to the growing region, the wine and its winemakers are deciphered. A mobile "Escape the Wineyards" station can even be booked on request. A fun challenge for company outings or corporate events , where everyone can prove their skills. And all without any sporting ambitions.
