How to motivate your employees and increase success in the long term, learn now

Why do I need to motivate my employees?

Often the process of demotivation and dejection in the team is insidious. For example, if there are new tasks that complement the previous ones, the workload increases. If other factors such as deadline pressure, competition among each other or resignations of other colleagues are added, this process feels very abrupt. The logical consequence of this is slowness, lack of concentration and ultimately unwillingness to continue. So it's time to take certain steps and motivate your employees in the long term.

Inform with regular meetings

As a boss, self-employed person or as a department head, one often tends to want to take direct action in combustible situations. But these steps often lead to employees completely "shutting down". Regular meetings inform employees about current events and let them participate more actively in the company. As a supervisor, whoever calls the team in for a conversation or meeting should also pay attention to word choice, tone of voice, and body language. Remember, it's not about troubleshooting, it's about finding solutions. Meetings are generally a good way to address the issues directly.

Avoid confrontational language. Use positive language. Talk about successes.

In meetings, you must never address individual employees in a confrontational manner. For example, if you address "Ms. Meier ..." in such a motivational meeting with "... your numbers make me uncomfortable" or "Why aren't you able to do the tasks properly", you have to expect an anti-attitude on the part of the employee. Rather, get your team used to the situation and keep the conversation open with regular meetings and empowering words. Incidentally, such positive behavior usually increases productivity directly.

Team days motivate employees easily

What sounds unthinkable in some industries is the tool of choice for other lines of business. A team day motivates employees through playful elements. It combines diversion with team building and ensures a positive effect. A team day can work wonders if designed correctly. Many companies also like to combine healthy outdoor teambuilding events with the annual company outing. This way you kill two birds with one stone. Motivating employees with a trip to the farm allows the team to grow together. There are also many other possibilities here for trips or company outings in Germany or even Europe.

As a manager, how do I motivate my team?

Especially smaller companies and enterprises in Germany, which are managed by one or two managing directors, simply do not have a personnel department. The management can and must therefore motivate its employees itself. The easiest way to do this is by giving them more responsibility. Regular team meetings build a new feedback culture. The openness with which you treat your employees is directly returned. The effect of this is great and immediately increases the trust in you as a company leader.

He who demands much must also be prepared to give much.

Through the above-mentioned team days or company trips lasting several days, you as the managing director not only increase your own reputation among employees. Rather, with extraordinary measures such as such a trip or a company outing lasting several days, you ensure sustainable employer branding. The employees' attitude towards the company improves, the identification with the product increases and at the same time, smart moves for the further success of the company result from the conversations on such a trip.

Delegate more responsibility.

If you take these steps to heart, you will ensure more team power and thus new areas of responsibility can be planned in the next step. At the same time, a positive side effect is that you as a manager have more room for other topics and tasks. So as a manager, make sure that you have an open relationship that gives employees room for decisions and responsibility to a healthy extent.

Workshops and training for more motivation

Finally, there is the possibility of specifically promoting employee motivation through training and workshops. This tool is often used for specific occasions and topics. It does not act like a fire brigade, but rather specifically targets where it is required. When booking workshops and trainings you should make sure that the topics are worked out and individualized between you and the seminar provider. Who sells ready-made concepts 1:1 as a seminar provider is not serious. Every topic, every concern and every wish is as individual as the employees of a company themselves.

Do not take the cheapest seminar offer.

If you want to motivate your employees, you shouldn't just go for the first offer that comes along. The more complex a seminar is, the more specifically it addresses the topic. The law of versatility applies here: also make sure there is room for free development, not just limited to seminar breaks. Rather, employees should be fully involved in the seminar. Including individual event modules can also motivate the employees to carry out the seminar day with 100% passion and willingness.
